School Disorientation
US Life, school August 29th, 2008Yesterday was the last day of orientation for international students at my school, and after being advised by our counselor about what subjects I needed to take, I was finally able to register for classes and pay my tuition (ouch). Now all I need to do is sit back and relax until the 22nd of September when school starts. So what have I learned the last few days?
A significant percentage of the Chinese student population is here in California. Everywhere I turn I keep meeting kids from China, Hong Kong and Macau. I’m sure the students from these countries are wondering whether they left their country at all.
I can pass for a college freshman apparently, so there’s no need for me to wear my Winnie-the-Pooh and Cinderella t-shirts to fit in.
I’m getting a record number of zits on my face. My skin’s contribution in my desperate bid to reclaim my youth.
The sun is scorchingly hot and I can’t use my umbrella for fear of alienating people and repelling potential new friends.
Sunvisors? Forget it! I’m sticking to my shades. I can’t do anything about the freckles but I can certainly do something to prevent getting premature wrinkles from squinting too much.
The boys during orientation are exactly that, boys. I’m too ashamed to even find anyone attractive. I don’t want to be a cougar in my late twenties.
I’m excited about courses I’ll be taking next year such as astronomy, visual arts, geology, human sexuality, introduction to film/tv and music: rock from roots to rap. I wish I had courses like these when I was in college the first time around. It would have made going to school less tiresome.
School, work, volunteering. School, work, volunteering. School, work, volunteering. School, work, volunteering. School, work, volunteering. School, work, volunteering.
This is THE PLAN.

about the umbrella thing, yeah, right decision. you don’t want to look fobby. ako nga kahit mainit (think texas), sige tiis na lang wag lang magmukhang f.o.b.

haha! yeah, my goal is to not stand out, freckles be damned! i’ve been slathering copious amounts of sunscreen on my face and arms but they irritate my skin so I’m probably going to throw in the towel soon and embrace the fact that being tanned here in the US is a GOOD thing.

naku. exciting nman yan. ok yan (going back to school) instead of doing nothing. masarap lang tumunganga for sometime then nakakasawa na din! hahaha.
good luck and make waves!

Yeah, I’ve had my fill of doing nothing. I’ve been reading a lot to keep my brain from turning into mush but that’s not enough. I’m actually excited at the thought of becoming super busy with school and (hopefully) work.

I’m proud of u this is yet a new place a new challenge brewing with lots of opportunities to meet learn and intersect with more lives. being a cougar might be a cool thing it’s probably the in thing nowadays. :p i’m stuck here in hong kong don’t know what I should do next. so for now it’s ur turn again to venture with new adventures. meanwhile I am stuck and I suck. :p

yakang-yaka naman yan sa iyo.
sabi nga nila, “when you stop learning—that’s it, you have the right to die the next day…”

thanks for the kind words my wanton mami. maybe you should come over here (again!) and we could actually meet and be stuck here together. i’d have more guts about exploring my cougar side (kung meron man) if I had you by my side.
lex, naku excited na ako maging school girl! number one, dahil feeling bata uli and number two dahil feeling bata uli hahaha! super interested ako malaman kung pano sila magturo dito and kung gano kalaki ang difference sa pagturo sa atin. definitely hindi ako makaka-report in front of the class while drinking chocolate milk at the same time!
