Birthday Girl

personal, picture 5 Comments »

Today is my birthday! Tun-dun-dun-dun-dun! Today is my birthday! Bam-ba-di-bam!

I’m 28. Frak frak frak.

Let me give you a few stories of some of my birthday celebrations from the time I was 2. I couldn’t find any pictures marking the celebration of my first, probably because my parents were still disappointed about the fact that I turned out to be a girl. After 2 girls and 1 boy, they were really hoping for a little Michael, well, Michelle was what they got.

My 2nd birthday (October 18, 1980 - Balut, Manila)

We celebrated my 2nd birthday at our very modest house in Balut. I can’t remember anything but I’m glad I had chocolate cake, I must have really enjoyed it. There are only two existing photos from that occasion and I feel bad for atsi because her face got cut in half in both. Mom probably took the pictures because she’s still a terrible photographer up to this day :)

My 3rd birthday (October 18,1981 - Lolo’s House)

I vaguely remember getting all bratty before the celebration because I didn’t want to wear my outfit. Looking at the pictures now, I think my outfit kicks ass! The only beef I have with most of my pictures from this day was that they forgot to take the cake box away. Hindi tuloy kita si Sleeping Beauty…teka, si Sleeping Beauty ba yun?

My 4th birthday (October 18, 1982 - Lolo’s House)

I remember this day if only for the huge yellow doggie that Tita Monina was making for me. You can see the filling she used inside the plastic bag in front of her.

The finished product is the dog sitting beside me in our surot-infested couch (c. 1984), look for the pic in my other account.

My 5th birthday (October 18, 1983 - Our House in Caloocan)

This particular birthday marked the first year of our stay in this house in Caloocan, we still live there up to now. I celebrated my birthday with relatives from both my mom’s and my dad’s side. Again, my mom forgot to take the cake box away, obstructed nanaman ang view nina Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.

My 6th birthday (October 18, 1984 - Our House in Caloocan and then Ape’s House in Malabon)

This was my most special birthday ever! My parents hired a videographer and photographer to capture the whole celebration and then a few years later, Lolo borrowed the betamax tape and when it came back, sira na! What’s more, I couldn’t find most of the pictures from that day save for a couple that were taken at home! Frak!

My 7th birthday (October 18, 1985 - Our House in Caloocan)

This was during my bungi phase, pero smile pa rin baby! I remember I was such a brat that day. My cousin Judith accidentally popped one of the balloons and I got angry and made her cry. I hope she has forgotten all about it. I was a super terror / spoiled brat when I was younger. Now, I still am but I use assertive instead of bratty because it sounds better.

My 8th birthday (October 18, 1986 - Our House in Caloocan)

This was my last big celebration (I’ll tell you why later) and mom invited everyone, even some of our restaurant employees. Super fun! I loved my Care Bears cake and my dress.

My 10th birthday (October 18, 1988 - Our House in Caloocan)

I skipped a year in birthday celebrations (my 9th) because my mom was pregnant at the time and she probably had a lot of things on her plate.

This was the year my little brother was born so everyone was crazy busy and probably had no time to organize a big birthday party for me. We came straight from school and I don’t even know where my father or brothers are. But I liked my cake and kept the doll on top for many years to come.

My 28th birthday (October 18, 2006 - Taipei, Taiwan)

So what’s with all these birthday anecdotes? Well, I’m sick of having choco rolls, sansrival and plain mocha cakes for my birthday so I went to Costco and got myself one of those birthday cakes with colorful icing on top. So what if it’s for kids? I would have preferred a different decoration - flowers aren’t really my thing - but because of poor planning, this was the last one left in the store so I took it, Chinese words and all!

* I took the birthday cake pictures a day early because it won’t fit inside the ref without damaging it. So I took the pictures and we rammed it in scraping both sides. It’ll look terrible but it will taste the same tomorrow.

* I have a multiply account I don’t really use because I don’t know anyone who has one, but it’s better than blogger and I’ve posted some songs, pictures and videos there.

Ay may boil sa forehead! Inom naman kaagad ng antibiotics. Tama ba naman yun? Naliligo naman ako araw-araw. If it sounds funny, I’m not laughing.

Factoid1: Nose looks bigger in picture while zit looks smaller.
Factoid2: There are freckles scattered everywhere. In time, they will form a map showing the way to Atlantis.
Factoid3: Duck lips courtesy of inclement weather.
Factoid4: I’m really iffy looking.
